Modern Foreign Languages

At the heart of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is developing a high-quality languages education which promotes pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

Overview

The curriculum provides a solid base and promotes a lasting interest in French. Students focus equally on skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. They have the opportunity to practise their language skills and reinforce classroom learning using web-based resources during timetabled lessons as well as at home.

  • Units combine grammar, linguistics and intercultural understanding, in addition to conversation, to add depth to pupils’ learning.
  • Students are taught how to introduce themselves, to talk about where they live, their school, their free time and holidays.
  • Students also have opportunities to study additional community languages and prepare for examinations in these subjects.

Homework

Pre Learning focuses on developing speaking and vocabulary and consolidating classroom learning.

Assessment

During the year, several assessments are carried out. These vary in form and include end-of-module tests, school examinations in the form of oral examination, a listening exam, self and teacher assessment and a reading and writing examination in the Summer Term.

Extended Learning

A range of foreign language books and magazines are available in the Learning Resources Zone for pupils to loan. Students will also be able to read foreign language newspaper articles online, and foreign language films will also be available to watch at home.

There are be varied opportunities to develop pupils foreign language skills through in-school competitions, joining an MFL club, applying to be ‘student-leader’ for our whole school international day, as well as other visits and residentials offered through the department.
