History
Overview
The History curriculum strives to extend and deepen knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history so that it provides a well-informed context for wider learning. Building on the Key Stage 2 History National curriculum students learn to identify significant events, make connections, draw contrasts, and analyse trends within periods and over long arcs of time.
KS3 units introduce and develop students’ knowledge and application of historical terms, concepts and skills required at GCSE and beyond.
Students are taught:
- How different types of historical sources are used rigorously to make historical claims.
- To recognise how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.
- Essential study skills such as the ability to locate and extract relevant information from a wide variety of sources; detect bias; analyse information, and develop their own original theories and ideas.
Content covered includes:
- British history over the past two milennia
- World history and great civilisations
- Key turning points in history
Homework
Tasks involve research, reading, extended writing activities or revising to consolidate learning. Online learning platforms such as Seneca Learning are used.
Assessment
Regular assessments are carried out throughout the year to assess student progress. We use a variety of assessment methods, including quizzing, project based and extended writing.
Extended Learning
Living in London provides students with a wealth of rich opportunities, particularly in Richmond upon Thames!
The History department organise trips to local palaces and historical buildings/parks, castles and a joint-department residential trip.
