Physical Education
Overview
The Curriculum builds on the physical development and skills learned in Key Stage 2. Students are taught to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities.
They are taught to identify and apply the skills that make a performance effective, and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work.
The KS3 curriculum develops confidence and interest in students to get them involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life. A central focus is on strengthening students’ understanding and application of the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Students are taught:
- To use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games.
- To develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports.
- To perform dances using advanced dance techniques within a range of dance styles.
- To analyse their performances and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
The units of work include outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and encourage teamwork, building trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group.
Homework
All students participate in at least one sports enrichment activity each week.
Assessment
Students are assessed throughout the year by self-assessment, by their peers and their teachers.
Extended Learning
The department encourages students to take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links, sports clubs or school teams.
Students are also invited to work towards gaining Sports Leadership Awards. Harlequins FC and our new Campus facilities will also provide students with access to world-class sports and fitness opportunities.
